7th MaFeszt in Satu Mare – Ten-Day Festival Begins on February 28
The festival originally started years ago in Satu Mare as an annual showcase of the member theatres. Since then, the theatre association has grown stronger and expanded with new festivals as well: an annual Hungarian theatre festival is now organized in Bucharest under the name BukFeszt, and the association also took over the organization of IFeszt (Interethnic Theatre Festival), with the blessing of its founding visionary, the late István Zsehránszky. Over the years, several new member theatres have joined MASZÍN, and the association’s headquarters have also moved to Satu Mare.
In the spring of 2025, representatives of the association elected István Bessenyei Gedő — director of the Harag György Company, one of the founders of the association and its former executive president — as president of MASZÍN, succeeding Attila Balázs. At the same time, Péter Stier, general director of the Northern Theatre in Satu Mare, was elected executive director of the association.
The seventh edition of the festival will also feature the recently joined theatres. The programme includes numerous main stage and studio productions, among them works by renowned directors such as László Bocsárdi, Gábor Tompa, Radu Afrim, and Sardar Tagirovsky.
The festival also offers an opportunity not only for audiences, but for the participating theatre companies themselves to watch each other’s productions. It provides an excellent setting for professional exchange and development, as well as informal encounters — not only during official events and professional discussions, but also at the afterparties.
As part of the 7th MaFeszt, actors and communication specialists from the participating companies will take part in roundtable discussions and workshops. The festival will feature productions by both long-standing and newly admitted MASZÍN member theatres, including drama, dance, and puppet divisions. As honorary guests, the Romanian-language division of the Northern Theatre, the Mihai Raicu Company, will also participate in the showcase with two important productions.
