Edit Kulcsár Awarded the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit

Edit Kulcsár, former literary secretary and dramaturg of the Harag György Company and currently dramaturg of Budapest’s National Theatre, has been awarded one of Hungary’s highest state honours.
Several important state distinctions were presented in Budapest on March 13, ahead of the upcoming national holiday. Among the recipients was Edit Kulcsár, former literary secretary and dramaturg of the Harag György Company, currently serving as dramaturg at the National Theatre in Budapest. According to the official citation accompanying the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit, the dramaturg and international relations officer of the National Theatre received the award in recognition of her work carried out with outstanding professional expertise and dedication throughout her decades-long theatrical career.
Edit Kulcsár was born in Satu Mare on January 3, 1963. She graduated in 1986 from the Polytechnic University of Timișoara with a degree in architecture engineering. Already during her university years in Timișoara, she became involved with theatre through the university stage led by László Bocsárdi. In 1982, she presented a solo performance based on poems by Domokos Szilágyi and Gizella Hervay.
Between 1986 and 1989, she was a member of the Figura Experimental Theatre, at that time still working as an actress. Until 1992, she also worked as an engineer, after which she became dramaturg and literary secretary of the Northern Theatre. In 1996, she graduated in theatre studies from Babeș–Bolyai University. In the meantime, in 2000, she also obtained a cultural management qualification from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.
Between 2003 and 2004, she worked in the Contemporary Drama Department of the National Theatre History Museum and Institute in Budapest as a representative for Hungarian theatres beyond Hungary’s borders. After a brief period as a freelance professional, she became grant coordinator at the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen in March 2007, and from January 2008 served as its chief artistic secretary. Since the 2013/2014 season, she has been working as dramaturg at the National Theatre in Budapest.
