Richard III in Constanța
September 05., friday, 2025
On August 30, starting at 8:00 p.m., one of the Harag György Company’s UNITER Award-winning productions will be presented at the House of Trade Unions in Constanța.This weekend, the Harag György Company of the Northern Theatre of Satu Mare will participate in the prestigious Constanța Performing Arts Summer Season (SEAS). The company will perform Richard III_clone, the critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning production directed by István Albu. The performance has already attracted significant interest from local audiences, with almost all tickets sold in advance despite the venue’s large seating capacity.
“In the decades before the political changes of 1989, the Hungarian section of the Satu Mare Northern Theatre took part in many adventurous tours along the Romanian seaside. However, since adopting the name of György Harag, the company has not performed in Constanța. In this sense, it can truly be said that the Harag György Company—at least under this name—is appearing for the first time in the capital of Romania’s Black Sea coast. The Constanța Performing Arts Summer Season is a highly prestigious international festival that showcases outstanding productions from various artistic disciplines. Following our two UNITER Awards, the invitation arrived on the very evening of the gala ceremony. On behalf of the company, I gladly accepted it,” said István Bessenyei Gedő, Artistic Director of the Harag György Company.
Richard III_clone is the latest installment in an ongoing multi-production directorial project. The integration of live music into the dramatic action creates a unique theatrical experience, transforming the performance into a genuine concert-show. This production features iconic American rock hits from the 1970s, with the band’s frontman becoming the singing alter ego of the ruthless Richard III.
In 2025, the production received the UNITER Award for Best Performance of the Year, while director István Albu was honored with the UNITER Award for Best Direction. The lead actor, Zsolt Csongor Nagy, also received the Best Leading Actor Award at the Atelier International Theatre Festival in Baia Mare.
Following its performance in Constanța, Richard III_clone will be included in the program of the National Theatre Festival (FNT) in Bucharest this October, before continuing its tour to Chișinău, the capital of the Republic of Moldova.
